Word to PDF

Convert DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF and TXT files to PDF with Office-grade accuracy: same fonts, layout and page size.

This conversion runs on a secure server, not in your browser.

These formats need conversion engines that can't run in a browser, so your file is sent over an encrypted connection to our conversion partner CloudConvert (ISO 27001 certified, GDPR compliant, servers in Germany, EU). It is converted, then deleted right after your download, and automatically within 24 hours at the latest. PDFDoco itself never stores your file. How we handle files

How to Convert Word to PDF

This tool sends your file to CloudConvert over an encrypted connection for conversion; it is deleted from their servers as soon as your download finishes, and automatically within 24 hours at the latest. Every PDFDoco tool except the Office, ebook and CAD converters runs in your browser.

A Word file looks different depending on who opens it. A missing font, another version of Word or a phone viewer can move line breaks, push a table onto the next page or shift a signature line. A PDF fixes the layout: every reader sees the same pages, and it prints the same way everywhere. That is why CVs, contracts, invoices and reports are usually sent as PDFs.

PDFDoco converts DOCX, DOC, ODT, RTF and TXT files with an Office-grade conversion engine, so your fonts, page size, margins, headers, footers, tables and images come out as they look in Word. You can convert up to 10 documents at once, turn your headings into PDF bookmarks, and create an archive-ready PDF/A. No sign-up and no watermark.

  1. 1

    Add your documents

Drop one or more DOCX, DOC, ODT, RTF or TXT files (up to 50 MB each).

  2. 2

    Choose options

Keep bookmarks from headings, include comments and tracked changes, or create PDF/A.

  3. 3

    Convert

Each file is uploaded securely, converted, and you see its progress live.

  4. 4

    Download

One file downloads as a PDF with the same name; several arrive together in a ZIP.

Fonts and layout kept

Fonts are embedded and the original page size and margins are kept, so the PDF looks like your document.

Clickable bookmarks

Word headings become a PDF outline, so readers can jump between sections of long reports.

Batch conversion

Convert up to 10 documents in one go and download them as a single ZIP.

Why the PDF looks like your Word document

Browser-based Word converters redraw your document with the fonts your device happens to have, which often moves line breaks and pages. PDFDoco uses a full Office conversion engine instead, so the page size (Letter or A4), margins, columns, section breaks, headers and footers, footnotes, tables, text boxes and images are laid out the way Word lays them out. The fonts are embedded, so the PDF looks the same on a computer without them.

Comments and tracked changes

By default the PDF shows the document as it reads now, without review markup. If you need reviewers to see who changed what, turn on Include comments & tracked changes. The markup then appears in the margin, as it does when you print from Word with markup. Accept or reject changes in Word first if you want a clean final copy.

PDF/A for archiving and e-filing

Some courts, government portals and archives require PDF/A, a version of PDF built for long-term storage, with every font embedded and nothing that depends on outside resources. Tick PDF/A for archiving before converting. To turn an existing PDF into PDF/A, use PDF to PDF/A.

How your file is handled

Most PDFDoco tools run entirely in your browser. Word conversion needs a full Office engine that can't run in a browser, so your document is sent over an encrypted connection to our conversion partner CloudConvert. CloudConvert is ISO 27001 certified and GDPR compliant, and we use its servers in Germany. The file is converted, then deleted from CloudConvert as soon as your download finishes, and within 24 hours at the latest. PDFDoco never stores it. Details are on our Security page.

After converting

Combine several PDFs into one with Merge PDF, make a large file smaller for email with Compress PDF, or add a password with Protect PDF. All three run in your browser.

Pro tip: if your document has a table of contents, turn on bookmarks. Readers get a clickable outline in the PDF's sidebar, which makes long documents much easier to navigate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Word formats can I convert?

DOCX and DOC from any version of Microsoft Word, ODT from LibreOffice or OpenOffice, RTF, and plain TXT files. Google Docs files work too: download them as .docx first (File > Download > Microsoft Word).

Will my fonts and formatting stay the same?

Yes. DOCX and DOC files are converted with an Office-grade engine that keeps the page size, margins, fonts, headers, footers, tables and images, and the fonts are embedded in the PDF. If your document uses an unusual font that isn't embedded in the Word file, a close match is used.

Can I convert several Word files at once?

Yes. Add up to 10 files, up to 50 MB each. They convert two at a time and download together as a ZIP, each named after its original document.

Can I convert a password-protected Word document?

Yes. If a document needs a password to open, the tool asks for it and converts the file again with that password. The password is used only for this conversion.

Is my document uploaded? Is it safe?

This tool is an exception to our in-browser tools: the document is sent over an encrypted connection to our conversion partner CloudConvert (ISO 27001 certified, GDPR compliant, servers in Germany). It is deleted right after your download, and automatically within 24 hours at the latest. PDFDoco never stores your files.

Is Word to PDF free?

Yes. You get several free conversions every day without signing up, and there is no watermark. Pro accounts get many more conversions a day.

Does the PDF have clickable links and bookmarks?

Hyperlinks in your document normally stay clickable in the PDF. With the bookmarks option on (the default), Word headings also become PDF bookmarks.
