How to Rotate PDF Pages and Save Them the Right Way Up
Fix sideways or upside-down PDF pages and save it for good. Rotate one page or the whole file in your browser — free, lossless, nothing uploaded.
Quick answer
- Open Rotate PDF, turn each sideways page with the arrows under it (or use Rotate All), then click Apply & Download.
- The rotation is saved in the new file, so it opens the right way up for everyone you send it to.
- Rotating is lossless: text stays sharp and selectable, and images aren't re-compressed.
You scanned a contract and page 3 came out sideways. Or you photographed a form with the phone turned the wrong way. It's one of the most common PDF problems, and fixing it properly takes less than a minute.
Why does my PDF keep opening sideways?
Many PDF readers have a rotate button, but it often only turns the page on your screen. Close the file, or send it to someone, and it opens sideways again. To fix it for good, the rotation has to be saved into the file itself — which is what a rotate tool does.
Each page in a PDF stores its own orientation. That's why one page can be sideways while the rest are fine, and why you can fix that page without touching the others.
How to rotate PDF pages and save them
- 1
Open Rotate PDF
Go to Rotate PDF and add your file. A thumbnail of every page appears.
- 2
Rotate the pages that need it
Use the left and right arrows under a page to turn it 90° at a time. The thumbnail turns with it, so you can see the result straight away.
- 3
Or rotate everything at once
If the whole document is the wrong way round, use Rotate All Left or Rotate All Right. Changed your mind? Reset puts every page back.
- 4
Apply and download
Click Apply & Download. The new file's name ends in -rotated.pdf, and your original isn't changed.
Fix one page or the whole file — your PDF stays on your device.
Rotate your PDFWhich way should I turn it?
| The page looks… | Click | How many times |
|---|---|---|
| Lying on its left side (the top of the text points left) | Rotate right | Once |
| Lying on its right side (the top of the text points right) | Rotate left | Once |
| Upside down | Either arrow | Twice |
You can click as often as you like before downloading — only the final orientation shown in the preview is saved.
Good to know
- No quality loss. Rotating changes only the orientation setting each page carries. Text, images and layout aren't redrawn, so text stays selectable.
- Pages already rotated in the original turn from where they are now. The preview always shows the end result.
- Printing follows the saved orientation, so in most PDF viewers and printers the page prints the right way up with no extra steps.
- Password-protected PDFs need unlocking first with Unlock PDF.
Fixing a messy scan
Scans often have more than one problem. Once the pages are upright:
- Put pages in the right order, or remove blank ones, with Organize PDF.
- Scanned the fronts and backs of double-sided pages as two files? Alternate & Mix interleaves them into one document.
- Make the file small enough to email with Compress PDF — see how to reduce a PDF's size for email.
Tip: Check every thumbnail before you download, especially in long documents. It's easy to click a page twice by mistake and end up with it upside down.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate just one page of a PDF?
Use the arrows under that page's thumbnail in Rotate PDF. Only that page changes; every other page stays as it was.
Does rotating a PDF reduce its quality?
No. Only each page's orientation setting changes. Text and images aren't re-rendered or re-compressed.
Why does my PDF go back to sideways after I rotate it in my PDF reader?
Many readers rotate only the view on your screen and don't save it in the file. Rotate the pages with a tool that saves a new file, like PDFDoco's Rotate PDF, and the orientation sticks.
Can I rotate a PDF on my phone?
Yes. Rotate PDF works in mobile browsers such as Safari and Chrome, and the file is processed on your phone without being uploaded.
